International Remembrance Day of the Roma genocide during the Holocaust
On 2 August each year, Holocaust Education Ireland marks the Genocide of Roma during the Holocaust. We recall the murder of 2,897 Roma men, women and children murdered in Auschwitz on the night of 2 August 1944. And we remember some 500,000 Roma from all over Europe who were incarcerated in ghettos, concentration camps, slave labour camps, and death camps, forcibly sterilized, used in medical experiments, persecuted and murdered during the Nazi era.
This poignant poem, Ana, was written and recited by Virginia Paun at the National Holocaust Memorial Day commemoration in January 2025.
