  • Tomi Reichental 1935-2026

    Holocaust survivor of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

    It is with much sorrow that we announce the death of Tomi Reichental who has passed away in his 91st year.

    Tomi’s contribution to Holocaust education in Ireland over more than 20 years is incalculable, sharing his personal experiences of the Holocaust with school children throughout Ireland as well as with people from all walks of Irish life and worldwide. On behalf of Holocaust Education Ireland, we extend our deepest sympathy to Tomi’s sons, his grandchildren, his partner, Joyce, to his family in Israel, his relatives and friends.

    As we mourn Tomi’s passing, we acknowledge the extraordinary contribution to Holocaust education and awareness that he made during his lifetime.

What We Do

  • Living History is a programme designed for students in which second- and third-generation Holocaust survivors and people with connections to the Holocaust visit schools and recount their families’ experiences and stories.

  • We host The Holocaust Webinar, a comprehensive program designed to educate participants about the Holocaust before, during, and after the Second World War. This interactive webinar provides valuable resources at no cost, equipping educators with the knowledge and tools to effectively teach their students about this critical subject. Join us to enhance your understanding and learn best practices for approaching the topic of the Holocaust in the classroom.

  • We organise study visits for teachers, professors, and anyone interested in the Holocaust and its history, offering two enriching experiences each year: one in spring to Berlin and another in autumn to Kraków. These visits include guided tours of significant historical sites, such as concentration camps, providing participants with a profound understanding of the events and their impact.

  • The Mary Elmes Prize in Holocaust Studies is named in honour of the only Irish person to receive the Righteous Among the Nations award. Senior Cycle students are invited to submit a History essay or artistic response (Art, Literature, Music) about any facet of the Holocaust that they would like to explore and raise awareness about.

  • Each year, Holocaust Education Ireland provides schools with crocus bulbs to plant in autumn in memory of all of the children who died in the Holocaust. Participation is free and teachers are provided with a Teacher’s Handbook, which contains a comprehensive set of lesson plans and resources.
