Crocus Project - Definitions

Word Box 1

  • This term has many positive applications: for example, two or more individuals may collaborate on a book, play, piece of music, building project, etc. However, in the context of World War II, the term “collaborators” applies to those who aided the Nazis.

  • A system of ideas and ideals, especially one which forms the basis of economic or political theory and policy.

  • A course or principle of action adopted or proposed by an organization or individual.

  • A group within a community which has different national or cultural traditions from the main population.

  • Exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed, either physically or emotionally.

  • A person who is blamed for the wrongdoings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.

  • A part of a city, especially a slum area, occupied by a minority group or groups. During World War II, the Jews were forced to live in the ghettos under Nazi control.

  • Take over the place, position, or role of.

  • Hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs; oppression.

  • Unpleasantly rough or jarring to the senses.

  • Come or bring together for a meeting or activity; assemble.

Word Box 3

  • Preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

  • The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion or disability.

  • Seek to harm, intimidate, or coerce (someone perceived as vulnerable).

  • The ability or willingness to tolerate the existence of opinions or behaviour that one dislikes or disagrees with.

  • A remark made in order to anger, wound, or provoke someone.

  • The position or status of being a citizen of a particular country.

  • The state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone.

  • A right which is believed to belong to every person.

  • A system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.

  • The restoration of friendly relations.

  • A serious disagreement or argument, typically a protracted one

  • The action of subduing someone or something by force.

  • The practice of including or involving people from a range of social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, religions, etc.

  • The deliberate killing of large number of people from a particular nation or ethnic group with the aim of destroying that nation or group.

  • Regard for the feelings, wishes or rights of other people.

  • Being friendly, generous, and considerate.

  • Hostility and ill-treatment, especially because of race, political, or religious beliefs.

  • The protection granted by a state to a person who has left their home country as a refugee.

  • The belief that different races possess distinct characteristics or qualities, distinguishing them as inferior or superior to other races.

  • A place or situation providing safety or shelter.

  • The act of denying someone access to a place, group, or privilege.

  • The practice of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might be excluded or marginalised.

  • Dislike or prejudice against people from other countries.

  • The state of being free from danger or threat.
